Edwin Parker “Cy” Twombly Jr.
(1928-2011)
American // Painter, Sculptor and Photographer
Abstract Expressionism
Ive been examining Cy Twombly’s work for a project I’m doing at my work. I hadn’t heard of him before and after spending a bit of time getting to know his work – I must say I’m a fan. I think Elusive Muse put it best when describing his style
“Although at first glance the graffiti-like scribbles and scratches of Cy Twombly‘s work might resemble art made by a naughty child of Jackson Pollock, it is nothing of the kind: it is the work of an erudite, sophisticated, and emotional painter.”

“Graffiti is linear and it’s done with a pencil, and it’s like writing on walls. But in my paintings it’s more lyrical.”

Interesting. Why? I mean, I studied him at art school. Seen much of his work in person. I have many instructors who think a lot of him. Never got a why. Historically, technically, or otherwise. So, I must ask, why?
Hi Sara! Thats why I love art – everything is so subjective. What one person likes, another person detests or simply has no interest in. I actually showed his art to my daughter as I was picking pieces to display on my blog and she didn’t like them at all either. I guess there are times in your life where art represents different things. Im mainly a fine art and classic art girl – but after having to study him for my job I feel a connection to the ghostliness of some of his pieces. They are bold yet shadowy. Almost like a backhanded compliment… you think you know whats going on but then when you look a little closer there is something else coming to the fore. Im not a big one to dissect art (all types of art such as books, movies, design etc) as I prefer to be left with a feeling as opposed to an analytical reason as to why I like something. All I have to say is that his work and these pieces above are resonating with me right now.
I don’t even understand how I ended up here, but I believed this submit was
great. I don’t recognize who you are but definitely you are going to a
famous blogger in case you aren’t already. Cheers!
Twombly is one of Orly’s favorites. She introduced me to his works. You will see some on your trip out here Thomas. I will tell you a funny story about looking at his work. I was amazed at seeing it for the first time. I stood on the line to keep people away and I LEANED over to look closely at it. The security guy came over and was whispering to me “please step back” like a million times and I did not realize what he was saying. A friend had to repeat it for him. His work is amazing and very large scale. He used his whole body to do artwork. It is amazing.
